All About TikTok

TikTok. The craze that really joined the social scene with a bang during Lockdown in 2020. Whether you’ve joined the platform yet or not, it’s hard to deny that ‘TikToking’ has become a sensation. With 800 million users worldwide, 2 billion downloads this year and being named the biggest app download in 2019, it's becoming increasingly harder to ignore the fact that TikTok has become a worldwide sensation.

From dancing videos and challenges to creative and inspirational posts, TikTok grew a huge 25 percent from March 2020 to now. So, what’s the hype?

TikTok got its name from being heavily inspired by the idea of ‘time’ and it’s aim is to get users to spend hours on the app. ( Yes hours, we’re guilty too…) Whilst scrolling through TikTok, there is no sense of time whatsoever, which is what makes it so great. This is also what makes it a great platform to create and place Ads on as the 15 seconds to 60-second videos have the ability to be creative, reactive and fun.

The platform is great for co-creations, creating reactive content and it gives you the ability to be active and attentive. Not to mention it has the craziest algorithm! Your video exposure is based on a PER video basis, meaning that you don't need any followers or audience at all to reach thousands and in some cases, millions of people.

Shares, likes, comments, rewatches and video completions are all taken into account when deciding how far to push your content who to show it to. Initial exposure is based on your geo-location and if the video initially performs well then it's even pushed to international audiences, isn't that the dream for social media managers?

So, how can TikTok help your business?

Like most other social media platforms, TikTok has the capability of running ads. With that being said, TikTok actually offers 6 different types of ads available on its platform.

In-Feed Video: In-Feed videos appear in the news feed as part of the queue and appear on a user’s For You Page (fyp).

Brand Takeover: These ads appear when the user first opens the TikTok app. Brand Takeover ads completely cover the screen before passing onto an organic in-feed video.

Top View: These ads build on the previous type of ad, however, they appear after three seconds of being on the app and are a relatively new feature on TikTok. These are fairly high-level as they offer auto-play video and sound for 60 seconds.

Hashtag Challenges: This type of ad is extremely unique to TikTok. Hashtag Challenges offer both organic and sponsored opportunities as advertisers can sponsor their hashtag which can appear on the trending, discover banner, yet they can also easily be spread by users organically following this.

Branded AR Content: Ads appear as branded lenses, effects or stickers which are available for users to use when creating their own content and videos. They are made live for up to 10 days and they work as a great way to get your brand out there in a fun way.

Custom Influencer Packages: These types of ads appear as part of sponsored content created by a viral TikToker (influencer) that has a lot of followers.

All of the ad types mentioned above are a great way to easily gain brand awareness and exposure in a fun, creative way. When it comes to creating user-generated content, using influencer marketing and utilising cross-platform promotion, TikTok is most definitely a must-try for any business out there.

Influencer Marketing on TikTok

Tiktok also has its own unique platform for businesses that allows you to view creators - this is called the TikTok Creator Marketplace. This innovative area allows all businesses, marketing managers and brand directors to see how creators' likes, views, shares and even the demographics of their videos. This information is gold dust for any company that's wanting to utilise influencer marketing on TikTok as it allows you to see the creators true engagement rates, meaning that you can pick the right influencer for you.
