AMP… you might have heard us talk about this concept a lot, however that’s because in a web dev world, it’s a pretty cool development. Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) are super-fast and super-efficient web pages, this is because they are essentially stripped down versions of existing websites.

To find out more about what AMP is, take a look at our blog where we discuss this, as here we’re going to get into what AMP can do! There has been a wide array of developments within AMP recently and it now has plenty of capability for different digital opportunities. Here we discuss what you can do with AMP and its different formats…

AMP Sites

For near-instant loading, high performance and great user-experience - nothing quite compares to AMP websites. Developed by Google, they were initially used by news sites for instant loading of news articles, but now they are widely used by companies across many industries.

Sites including Vox, Tasty, BMW and Washington Post have all had pages developed in AMP; providing a site that is user-first and super fast at loading. This is because with AMP, developers have plenty of flexibility with code within the Google platform, which is already optimised for the best performance.

Built within the open-web, AMP sites are available across various web touchpoints including Google, Bing and Twitter, providing users with a native feeling experience. Due to the sites being cached, it allows for instant loading from the different platform's services. Sites will default to AMP when available, and pages are discovered through the search engines through the AMPHTML tags.

AMP Stories

Visually tell your stories and immerse your readers with super-fast AMP Stories. Create visual tales with full-screen mobile experiences and enjoyable news bites. Stories are free and are available for anyone to use on the open web, making them an accessible platform for users to quickly get their dose of news. As they’re on the open-web, this makes sharing across sites available and easy - increasing the story’s reach.

AMP stories allow publishers to use engaging animations and allow users to interact with the stories, making them just that little more interesting. Engage users by combining a range of different media to create your stories including; images, videos and gifs; text and audio; and animations and interactions. Images and videos will fill the reader’s screen, whilst you can also use text which is ideal for presenting news stories and audio for adding ambience with background music. Animations and interactive features create a visual and engaging story for users, creating a smooth flowing experience.

If you’re familiar with Snapchat news and Instagram stories then you’ll have an idea of how the whole stories aspect works. If not, why not take a look where you find your Snapchat stories and have a flick through the stories published by a variety of different companies.

There are many benefits of using AMP stories as a company, as it offers great flexibility for companies to use their own branding and release their own creativity. As well as the ability to keep track of how stories are performing with support from analytics, and track page views as well as the performance of affiliate ads and ‘story ads’ which run alongside Google Ads.

AMP Ads

As mentioned, AMP can be used to serve super-fast ads through both AMP pages and stories. In a world where expectations are instant, and anything less just isn’t good enough, AMP is becoming a more and more vital innovation for companies to embrace. Changing the way that ads work, AMP ads provide users with a faster ad experience, resulting in increased views for the companies.

As we all know paid ads are one of the fastest ways to increase traffic and enhance awareness but un-engaging ads won’t do the job. That’s why AMP ads are different as they have pre-loading features to deliver better value ads. Ads are built in AMPHTML to ensure the deliverability is as fast as it can be, and they can be served on both AMP and non-AMP pages ensuring that brands are experienced all over the web.

AMP Ads are part of the whole user-first system developed by Google AMP and therefore the ads are optimised to be super-fast, streamlined and effective. So what’s the difference between AMP ads and traditional ads? Well AMP supports both regular ads as well as more secure AMPHTML ads, however AMPHTML ads are approximately 6x faster than regular ads on AMP pages and the AMP ads load 5x faster than the non AMP version. As the site loads instantly, so will the ads with AMP HTML ads, meaning you can increase the number of conversions thanks to the faster ad experience.
