Don’t panic. Whatever you do. Do. Not. Panic. ‘B-b-but, it’s gone!’ you cry. It’s
okay, don’t fret, I can explain everything, calm down… So if you were
pleasantly going about your business last week, had a jolly good Easter/Bank
Holiday weekend and then decided to dust off an old forgotten AdWords account
this week, you may be scratching your head wondering where has it gone? Well
unfortunately unlike those forgotten gym memberships from yester-January two
years ago, Google have decided to clamp down on inactive AdWords accounts and
shut them down. As of the 26th March any accounts “inactive” (defined by Google
as accounts which have not spent in 15 months) have been “cancelled”. If you’re
currently sat feeling a mixture of anger and sadness, fear not! For as
mentioned at the very start of this article, you need not panic. Indeed there
is a method to Google’s supposed madness and all is not lost for your lonely
forgotten account. Let us explain…
So Why Are Google "Cancelling" My Adwords Account?
Simply put, you weren’t using it were you? But, that isn’t the answer you were after. So why have Google cancelled your old AdWords account? Well Google are currently pushing forward with a need for speed.
They are cancelling accounts to speed up the
AdWords experience and to help users stay aligned with their manager account
limits.
As mentioned cancelled is what it says on the tin: Cancelled. All your lovely historical data will fade away into the digital afterlife, but as mentioned previously if you weren’t using it, don’t feel too disheartened.
By shedding AdWords of it’s unused stored
data, Google are now able to alleviate backend strain to help the platform run
substantially faster.
Even better is that if your account is among
those heading to digital Valhalla and you happened to have a unspent, prepaid
budget on it then it will be refunded by Google (see they aren’t that bad!),
huzzah!
Turn that frown upside down. It’s going to be okay, you have a few options at your disposal…
Turn that frown upside down. It’s going to be
okay, you have a few options at your disposal…
1. Create a new AdWords Account! If you’ve not re-entered the realm of PPC (Pay Per Click) in the last 15 months, you could be surprised by how much has changed. Starting again, may actually be in your best interest, after all with all the changes in just the last few months it is no surprise that starting from scratch might be more valuable to you. Who knows, it might be fun...
2. Rejoice. If you do want to reignite your old AdWords flame then you can! Simply follow these steps:
In the new AdWords UI, click the tool icon at the top of the page and select ‘Preferences’.
Now click the 'Account Status' section...
If your account has been deleted, there will be an option to reactivate your account here. Click it and the status will place you back into 'your account is active'. Voila, it's back, get using it.
